Cedar Springs is hoping to open a new library, exactly 80 years after the local library got its official start. The fundraising campaign took a big jump last week at a gala where plans for a new facility were unveiled. "It was amazing," said Cedar Springs librarian Donna Clark. "Over $25,200 came in in cash and checks and another $38,000 was pledged. It was really something." The event, which was held at the American Legion Hall, attracted more than 100 residents, boasted entertainment from a young musician from the Piano Cottage, and touted plans for a 9,998-square-foot building with covered entryway, outdoor patio, display cases, drive-through book deposit, kitchen, and space for tutoring, classrooms, and meetings. Clean-up along the White Pine Trail and previous storage area belonging to Tony Johnson Lumber at the west end of Maple Street began on a very cold and windy January 10th when a bunch of “supermen” from the area got to work. Nick Andres, Kurt Mabie, and Dave Ringler from the Community Building Development Team pulled the event together. The West Michigan Hawks, a semi-pro football team in the Minor League Football Alliance league and based in Cedar Springs, brought 10 of their finest guys to help out. Several other men from the community came along for a total of nearly 20 guys, wielding chain saws and basic brawn to cut down trees and brush. In addition to the new Cedar Springs Library, on the northwest corner, and the brewery on the southwest corner, the CBDT hopes to build an amphitheatre on the city’s property (the old foundry property) to the west of where the library will be. The team was at the Cedar Springs City Council meeting last Thursday, October 9, to pitch the project. “The Community Building Development Team is a group of people who want to make the community better,” explained CBDT trustee Tom Holloway, and…

Remembering and building community

By Sue Wolfe – Published in the Cedar Springs Post – January 30, 2014 Many of you will remember being served a hot peanut butter fudge sundae or a cherry coke at the soda fountain of Skinners Drug Store on Main Street. What about shopping for new shoes, accessories, or school clothes at Mather’s or Pollock’s stores? The Bait Shop on north Main Street met all the sportsman’s needs. Walsh’s 5 & 10 Cent Store was a favorite for the kids. I bought a Honda 90 motorcycle from Dave Carlson at Hough’s Gas Station across from the IGA. McIntyre’s’ Meat market and Jack’s Party Store were popular spots. While working at Jeffrey’s Bakery, my mailman, Harold Foley would personally deliver greatly anticipated letters to me from my then-boyfriend and now-husband…

Community Building… Building Community?

Home Page, In The News
Excerpts from, “From the Pulpit,” By Tom Holloway – Published in the Cedar Springs Post on January 24, 2014 Community Building and Building Community—are they one and the same? They are the same words for sure. But do they mean the same thing? I hope that our answer in Cedar Springs is “Yes.” A community building is a place where a community would come together in a physical space that is common.  A physical space where the needs of the community are both felt and met. In order for this to happen, or course we need to first build a sense of community. Right now in Cedar Springs there is great enthusiasm for a “Community Building” to be put together to meet the ever-growing needs of an ever-growing community.  Even…
