Grand Opening – New Cedar Springs Library – May 13, 2017

Join us for the grand opening of the new Cedar Springs Library on Saturday, May 13, 2017 from 2pm-5pm. The new library is located at 107 N. Main Street, Cedar Springs, MI 49319.

Grand Opening festivities will begin at 2:00 pm with a flag raising ceremony by the American Legion Color Guard, Glen Hill Post 287 and a couple of patriotic songs by the Cedar Springs High School Band. Other events to follow include acknowledgements and ceremonial ribbon cutting. After the ceremony everyone is invited to take a tour of the new library and enjoy refreshments until 5 pm.  Stationed throughout the library will be local authors, a puppeteer, staff, local officials from the Library Board, the City of Cedar Springs, Solon Township, and the Community Building Development Team.

The library was built with donated funds, products, and services from the community and local businesses. The additional 8,000 square feet will allow for much greater areas for reading, special events, and small group gatherings. Donations of any amount are still greatly needed to help purchase furniture, kitchen items, and other operational items for the library.

New Library Details
The large library will be an asset to the community, as use and demand for programs, services and materials has continued to increase. Currently there are 4,025 active card users of the 9,467 people in the Library service area. Average daily traffic exceeds 110 people. And children’s programming attendance has soared to 3,949. Quality programs are offered for every age, and last year attendance swelled to 6,448.

The Library has long been committed to finding a new home that could accommodate the volume and growth of recent years, as well as further nurture the community’s interest in and love for learning. In 2000, the Library engaged in a needs assessment study to determine the current status of the library, gauge the community’s need and desire for an improved library facility and services, and determine the appropriate facility size based on current and future collection and program needs.

Based on the recommendations from the report, the Cedar Springs Public Library has been committed to raising the funds necessary to secure a proper home to meet the current and long-term needs of the community. For the past 13 years, the Library Board members, staff and passionate volunteers have focused on securing a new, larger facility.

The library’s new home has 10,016 square feet of space (nearly five times the current size). It will include defined areas for children, teens and adults. Shelving space will be increased to allow for growth of the collection. There will be three small group rooms ideal for tutoring or studying, a classroom and a larger multi-purpose room with an outside patio and 12 computer workstations.
